It’s been a good week. Although my girlfriend is still struggling with homelessness, she has been able to start working and earning. She’s extremely grateful for my support of her and even spent part of her first paycheck on gifts to me. I’m flattered.
When I went to drive her to work on Tuesday, she surprised me with a very nice custom arrangement of flowers. I had never received flowers before, and to be gifted a vase full of them was shocking. I recall tearing up. It’s a beautiful arrangement.
The next day, she took me to a classy Tex-Mex restaurant downtown: La Fonda on Main. And let me tell you: it was the best Tex-Mex I’ve ever had. It might even be the best restaurant food I’ve ever had period. It was phenomenal. It was variety plate that consisted of a hard-shelled taco, a tamale, and an enchilada. We got the same dish, actually, and just how good it was keeps coming up in our conversations. She definitely did her research on good spots for a date. It was so nice of her to take me out, even in her situation. I felt honored.
We spent the rest of the day together, too. We haven’t been able to hang out for almost a month and a half. It was nice. No one has ever shown me that kind of appreciation before this week. I’m very happy.
But the food. The food! We both agreed we need to go back there soon. The problem is it’s not cheap. It’s a high-class place. And it makes other restaurants seem low quality by comparison.
She has seen a share of terrible things at the shelter. I’ve seen people tweaking out in that area a few of the times I’ve gone to pick her up. It’s a tough place. I admire her resilience. I love her and I know things will get better for her. It’s just… going to take some time.
