My Music Taste

An extremely common small-talk topic is “What kind of music do you like”? I never know quite what to say other than “different kinds of rock and metal”. The people that usually ask me that question usually aren’t the kind of people that listen to rock or metal, so the conversation always goes to a different topic. But that’s not to say I don’t want to talk about my music taste.

Lately I’ve been jamming to some late 90’s and 2000’s Fear Factory. It’s heavy music; I guess you could call it industrial metal (I’m not an expert on genres). Here’s Edgecrusher from Fear Factory’s Obsolete.

I’m also a fan of alternative metal bands like System Of A Down, Disturbed (yes, the ooh-wa-ah-ah-ah band), and Korn. I think most people reading this will have heard a handful of these band’s songs before; my highlights will be some lesser-known songs. Disturbed’s cover of The Sound of Silence was a viral hit, and I’m pretty sure almost everyone has heard it. Anyways, here’s Remember from the Disturbed album Believe:

And here’s Spiders by System Of A Down from their debut, self-titled album.

Some other bands that come to mind as far as my taste in metal goes are Avenged Sevenfold, TOOL, Sevendust, and of course Metallica. While I don’t really listen to them, I also like a handful of “classic metal” bands like Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin.

The lines between rock and metal can get blurry sometimes, but I definitely like music that is identified as just rock. I guess you could say my taste is 2000’s and 2010’s rock. Bands like Linkin Park, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, and Muse come to mind.

One band that I have found to be not as popular as I had assumed is Shinedown. Shinedown’s a hard rock band that has had a large presence in my playlists for a long time. I vibe with a lot of their songs. Here’s Second Chance from the album The Sound Of Madness.

I also like so-called “dad rock”, like Nirvana and namely Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters is my father’s favorite band, and many car rides were spent listening to them. Out of all of the bands I named on this post, Foo Fighters is probably the band with the most amount of songs I can name off the top of my head. Here’s the instant classic Best Of You by Foo Fighters.

This is the kind music that you’ll most likely find me listening to. Of course, there’s lots of bands I didn’t name and I don’t always listen to rock or metal. Which kind of rock or metal (or something else) I listen to largely depends on my mood.

As an aside, there’s some video games with absolutely banger soundtracks. I don’t listen to really actively listen game OSTs, mostly because you have to go out of your way to find them; my main music service (Spotify) doesn’t really have my favorite OSTs. But still, these songs are super catchy and also surprisingly heavy on the instrumentation. If I’m ever on my PC and I feel like listening to some heavy music without lyrics, I’ll pull it up on YouTube and jam out. Here’s Mechanical Rhythm from my favorite RPG, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition;

I hope this gives you a good idea of my music taste. I never really get to talk about it, so thanks for reading!
